PLAN
YOUR MOVE
Four Weeks Before
the Move...
- Call Fiamingo Moving
and schedule your move.
- Tour your house
and decide which items should be discarded or donated to charity. Consider
a garage sale.
- Call physicians
and dentists. New privacy regulations concerning medical records require patients to complete written requests for transfer of records to a new doctor; gathering these forms in advance will make the process easier for you. Get copies of renewable prescriptions.
- Arrange transfer
of school records.
- Be sure your new
home is protected by transferring fire, theft and other personal-property
insurance.
Three Weeks Before
the Move...
- Plan to use up
most food items before the move.
- Check and clear
tax assessments.
- Arrange to have
major appliances serviced before you move them.
- Movers can’t take oils, paints, aerosol cans, flammables, corrosives, or ammunition. Please make arrangements to use, discard, or give away these items. Propane tanks, whether full or purged and tagged, cannot be moved and lawnmower fuel tanks must be emptied.
Two Weeks Before
the Move...
- Make your travel reservations for the trip.
- Notify the post office and get change of address forms. Notify magazines to which you subscribe. Note that you must fill out a change of address form for each person receiving mail at your address.
- Close or transfer charge accounts.
- Return library books and other borrowed items.
- Collect things you’ve loaned, items in layaway, cold storage, safe deposit boxes, etc.
- Arrange to discontinue utilities and delivery services. You should arrange for the utilities to be turned off the day AFTER you are scheduled to move.
One Week Before
the Move...
- Transfer bank accounts to your new city.
- Reconfirm travel reservations.
- Arrange connection of utilities in your new home. Draw up a floor plan of your new home and consider placement of furnishings. Having a plan will help you better direct the crew on delivery day.
- Arrange to have cash, cashier’s check, or a money order ready to pay the driver before goods are unloaded, unless your employer is paying the charges or you’ve arranged in advance to pay by credit card.
- Set aside maps, games, snacks, flashlight, and the other items you’ll take in your car.
- Gather medicines and important papers for the car trip.
- Drain water from all garden hoses.
- Start packing suitcases.
- Anything Fiamingo Moving is packing should be left in place. It’s easier and safer, for example, to pack glassware right from the cabinet its kept in.
- Make arrangements for someone to babysit children and care for pets on moving day away from the home.
The Day Before
the Move...
- Confirm that you have the name, address, and phone number of your destination agent if your shipment is going to storage.
- Set aside a ‘load last-unload first’ carton of toiletries and other essentials.
- Finish packing all suitcases.
- Defrost, clean, and dry refrigerator. If your shipment is going to storage or will be in transit for an extended period, it is recommended that you do this sooner to ensure that it is completely dry before loading.
The Day of the
move...
- Be on hand all day to answer questions, accompany driver during inventory, sign all paperwork, and confirm your new address and delivery date. Be sure to advise him of your en route contact phone number.
- Make a final check of every room. Check cabinets, drawers, and storage spaces while your truck is still at the residence. It is your responsibility to confirm that all items are loaded before the driver departs.
